What is the Difference in TUSQ Materials?

TUSQ

TUSQ nuts have a rich tone without the inconsistency found in ivory, bone, and other natural materials. Bone and ivory have hard and soft spots (grain) throughout each piece, hampering the consistent transfer of vibrations to the guitar top. TUSQ nuts are designed to transfer the right frequencies more efficiently from the string to the guitar body.

Best for Acoustic Guitars.

TUSQ XL and Black TUSQ XL

TUSQ XL and Black TUSQ XL nuts are designed to boost guitar tone and performance. These precision-engineered nuts are made with a specially formulated material that couples the strings' vibrations to the neck and brings out the hidden harmonics and richness in every note. It is based on the highly resonant TUSQ man-made ivory but is permanently lubricated to improve the tuning performance of the guitar.

Best for Electric Guitars and BASS.

    Essential for builds

I build guitars and always use Graphtech nuts, saddles and string trees. I have found that the sustain is so much better along with reduced friction based on the Graphtech material used. The string trees are used on Fender style builds I do and the especially when one adds a decent tremolo. Attached a few pics of the latest builds (2026) with the Graphtech products.

    perfect

Intalled the nut and trees on my Tele- partscaster and it made tuning and staying in tune a snap. This simple fix completely changed my guitar from a dud to a stud. The nut took only a couple minutes to sand the length to fit exactly. The height, width and string slots were perfect. A+. The combination is perfect.

That's fantastic Parnell! Love hearing about a "dud to stud" transformation - Thanks for the stellar 5-star review! Dave D

    Top quality and easy installation

I got this set to replace a MIM Stratocaster nut and string tree. The installation was straight forward and required minimal sanding to get rid of the little middle square of material to have the 9.5 inch radius that I needed. I added a second string tree so I had to drill the headstock but that also was pretty straight forward. The result is a more resonant instrument and improved tuning stability.

    Works Great

I installed this nut on a MIM Stratocaster with .009" strings on it. The factory nut (even after filing the slots) would bind. The Graphtech nut made a huge difference. Now, my guitar stays in tune much better. Installation wasn't as difficult as I expected. This was my first attempt at replacing a nut but it turned out very well.
