What is the Difference in TUSQ Materials?

TUSQ

TUSQ nuts have a rich tone without the inconsistency found in ivory, bone, and other natural materials. Bone and ivory have hard and soft spots (grain) throughout each piece, hampering the consistent transfer of vibrations to the guitar top. TUSQ nuts are designed to transfer the right frequencies more efficiently from the string to the guitar body.

Best for Acoustic Guitars.

TUSQ XL and Black TUSQ XL

TUSQ XL and Black TUSQ XL nuts are designed to boost guitar tone and performance. These precision-engineered nuts are made with a specially formulated material that couples the strings' vibrations to the neck and brings out the hidden harmonics and richness in every note. It is based on the highly resonant TUSQ man-made ivory but is permanently lubricated to improve the tuning performance of the guitar.

Best for Electric Guitars and BASS.

    Couldn't be any easier.

I've never HAD to replace a nut on a guitar until I got a cheap kit Tele with an atrocious nut. All I did was measure the nuts I have on my other Fender style guitars and ordered one closest to it. Popped right in no problem. I play 9s and this needed no cutting or shaping. Will definitely return to Graphtech if I ever need another nut.

    Still love these things

Put this on my super Strat and had the same amazing results as my pervious Strat install. Tuning is so much better and I love the clear and crisp tone it adds.

That's awesome Norman! So glad you're getting those same amazing results on your second install - there's nothing quite like that feeling when you know exactly what upgrade is going to deliver. The tuning stability and that clear, crisp TUSQ tone really do make such a difference on any guitar. Thanks for being a repeat customer and for the fantastic 5-star review! Dave D

Always a great product, always results in a tone upgrade

One of my default upgrades when restoring an old guitar is to swap the nut wit a Graphtech. If I have a guitar without it, its definitely on the todo ;) great products and selection.

    Tusq nuts -too simple ?

I have used various Graphtech products over the years, the first was finding Graphtech string-saver saddles which solved a problem I had been having on my Fender Strats with string breakage over the stock saddle. I had been trying to smooth the saddles by filing and sanding which only worked for a short time. I even went the numbskull route and just put a piece of matchbook cover cardboard or similar material under the strings which was lunacy abetted by necessity. This problem was gone forever after I began using Graphtech saddles.

I have a Strat with the Ghost System installed which is a very cool way to get acoustic sounds on an electric guitar and still keep the graphite saddles for string protection.

Now I have been ordering and using Tusq nuts on the guitars I work on for sale or repair of my own instruments. With careful measurement I have found Tusq nuts are almost perfect fit . I only needed to make sure the nut slot was clean and flat, and the Tusq nuts only need some additional shaping and careful filing of the string slots to depth and making sure the "back" of the string slots were rounded towards the tuners. These Tusq nuts can be finished in a couple hours including string-up and tuning. It feels like its too simple ! After years of long hours spent measuring and cutting a bone blank., I almost feel like I'm cheating. But having a pro like Dan Erliwine of Stew-Mac tell us that Tusq is as good as bone got my attention and it does make some…
