What is the Difference in TUSQ Materials?

TUSQ

TUSQ nuts have a rich tone without the inconsistency found in ivory, bone, and other natural materials. Bone and ivory have hard and soft spots (grain) throughout each piece, hampering the consistent transfer of vibrations to the guitar top. TUSQ nuts are designed to transfer the right frequencies more efficiently from the string to the guitar body.

Best for Acoustic Guitars.

TUSQ XL and Black TUSQ XL

TUSQ XL and Black TUSQ XL nuts are designed to boost guitar tone and performance. These precision-engineered nuts are made with a specially formulated material that couples the strings' vibrations to the neck and brings out the hidden harmonics and richness in every note. It is based on the highly resonant TUSQ man-made ivory but is permanently lubricated to improve the tuning performance of the guitar.

Best for Electric Guitars and BASS.

    Saved my guitar...

I replaced the factory-installed nut on my Fender neck with this new Graph Tech nut and greatly improved the string alignment and tuning stability of my Stratocaster. The string alignment with the factory nut was so bad, I just didn't like playing the guitar. With this new Graph Tech nut, I feel like I have a new guitar! Thank you Graph Tech!

    Nut for Stratocaster

I had to sand a little on the sides and adjusted the string slots but that’s to be expected as every guitar is different. I’m very pleased with the quality.

Improved play-ability, tuning stability and resonance.

The original nut that came with my Fender American Performer strat was a nightmare from the beginning.

After working on the nut slots over and over with little improvement, I had enough!

I dropped this graph tech nut right in after I sanded down the tab and made a couple passes on the sides. Now I have fantastic tuning stability and improved resonance.

    Easy installation

Installed on a 1997 American Strat with a 9.5" radius, to replace an OG black Graphtech nut that was probably close to 25 years old. Aside from the need to file down the center tab to fit the radiused nut slot, it was very nearly, but not quite, a drop in installation - might have been an oddity of the particular slot but I had to sand the nut slightly to get it to fit the slightly-narrower slot, and then after installing the nut itself was a fraction of a millimeter wider than the slot (I suspect due to the rounded fretboard edges and, again, guitar-specific idiosyncrasies. Beyond that, while not strictly necessary, I also contoured the shoulders a little more to align better with the rounded edges, but this was cosmetic more than functional. Otherwise, it was flawless - the tech who had installed the previous nut seems to have shimmed it ever-so-slightly with maybe a half millimeter of what looks like mahogany - I think this was being conservative because the replacement, unshimmed, was flawless, on a guitar with jumbo frets replacing the stock medium jumbos no less. No open position buzz, and just taking that half mm or so off the action across the length of the neck made a perceptible difference in how this guitar plays - it's up there with my Suhrs now.

Tonally, tough to say since this was replacing an existing Graphtech nut, but open chords do seem a little fuller and more resonant now, subtle but sort of "bigger" in both the lows and the highs. Not wildly different,…

    Squire affinity telecaster

Very good and precise product. However it did not fit my squire affinity telecaster which has a straight nut slot that which is too deep for this product even though all other dimensions were perfect. So I created the needed shim out of a second tusq nut. This is for sure not a problem if the product but I’m missing an option like the 5000 but with more material on the bottom that then can be fit to various guitars. I just hm have a fender Stratocaster having a curved nut slot but also slightly too deep for the standard 5000.
