SO, WHAT'S THE RATIO® DIFFERENCE?
When describing their machine heads, manufacturers usually include a ratio in the specifications. The two-digit number tells you how many times you have to turn the machine head’s button for the string to make one full revolution.
Graph Tech Ratio® Tuned Machine Heads have tuned the gear ratios to each string position, so every string responds in the same manner to tuning adjustments. This enables the user to experience fine tuning on thicker core strings, and coarser tuning on thinner core strings (anywhere from 12:1 to 39:1 gear ratios).
One of the problems with installing regular machine heads is that they have to be retrofitted to match your instrument. This often means you need to drill holes for modifications. Fortunately, Graph Tech has created a one-stop-shop with Ratio® tuning technology. The multi-gear tuning keys include several base plates in the box itself, so you won’t have to drill any new holes or visit a tech.
Installation of the keys is very simple.
All you need are a basic socket wrench and a Phillips screwdriver. In the above video, you’ll see Phillip McKnight remove an existing Fender machine head with his Gator Grip socket. He then adds the Fender plate to the bottom of the Graph Tech Ratio® Tuner and easily reattaches it to the guitar.
After testing out the newly-outfitted machine heads, McKnight was considerably impressed with the crisp accuracy of the tuning process:

With regular machine heads, the user often needs to anticipate the final note the string will end up on while turning the key.
