What is the Difference in TUSQ Materials?

TUSQ

TUSQ nuts have a rich tone without the inconsistency found in ivory, bone, and other natural materials. Bone and ivory have hard and soft spots (grain) throughout each piece, hampering the consistent transfer of vibrations to the guitar top. TUSQ nuts are designed to transfer the right frequencies more efficiently from the string to the guitar body.

Best for Acoustic Guitars.

TUSQ XL and Black TUSQ XL

TUSQ XL and Black TUSQ XL nuts are designed to boost guitar tone and performance. These precision-engineered nuts are made with a specially formulated material that couples the strings' vibrations to the neck and brings out the hidden harmonics and richness in every note. It is based on the highly resonant TUSQ man-made ivory but is permanently lubricated to improve the tuning performance of the guitar.

Best for Electric Guitars and BASS.

Huge Upgrade in Tone and Stability, Worth Every Penny

I’ve installed the Graph Tech TUSQ Nut 6114-00 Slotted on a few guitars now, and it’s one of those upgrades that immediately makes a noticeable difference. Right out of the package, the slotting is clean and consistent, which saves a ton of time compared to cutting a nut from scratch. Minor adjustments may still be needed depending on your setup, but it gets you 90% of the way there.

The biggest improvement is tuning stability. Strings glide smoothly through the slots with no binding, especially noticeable when using tremolo systems or doing bends. It also holds tuning better during aggressive playing, which is a big win.

Tone-wise, there’s a clear upgrade over standard plastic nuts. Open strings ring out with more clarity and sustain, and the overall response feels more balanced across all strings. It’s subtle, but definitely there, especially on clean tones.

Material quality is excellent. TUSQ has a consistent density, so you don’t get the dead spots or inconsistencies you sometimes find in cheaper materials. It’s also durable and doesn’t wear down quickly.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective way to improve playability, tuning stability, and tone without going full custom bone nut, this is an easy recommendation.

    solid

I've been using Tusq nuts and saddles since setting up my repair shop over a year ago. They're great replacements for plastic or if the guitar's geometry has changed and a new nut is needed. So may choices of sizes and string spreads. Great stuff.

This one was for my own 1991 Takamine NP15C. Fits perfectly and sounds great.

    It really works!!! Gretsch G6134TFM

I bought Gretsch G6134TFM Nigel Hendroff signature penguin about 2 years back. But this guitar was literally unplayable due to tuning issue. Forget about bending or using bigsby, tuning was going out by only playing chords.

Tried to fix it by installing new nut with filing by luthier, putting roller bridge and string buttler but nothing worked.

I just gave up and used it with only very gentle chord playing.

Recently I bought this black tusk graphtech nut 6114.

Width and length was perfect. Only need to sand bottom part little bit to make it lower which i didn't do yet.

Magically tuning issue is solved. Really it stays in tune even with bending and using tremolo. Wish I had bought it earlier...

    Thank you so much
